How we source clothes bank data

We bring together location details from OpenStreetMap, operator location finders and first-hand community reports. This page brings together the source links so you can check the details before a visit.

Operator and community information

Bank details for these operators come from their public location finders. We keep the published name, address and position, and we link each bank to its finder. Where the finder names the charity that receives the proceeds, the bank page shows that charity as well as the operator. Operator names identify the listed service; they do not imply a partnership or endorsement.

Community contributions help us add banks that people have visited. Each contribution records what the visitor saw, the date and the position they gave.

Donation guidance sources

Check before you travel

Check the bank label for accepted items and access times. Full or emptied reports show what a visitor saw at the stated time. Reports expire after 48 hours and are not a guarantee of available space.

Postcode coordinates

Great Britain postcode searches use OS Code-Point Open files stored with this site. The files contain postcode coordinates and are rebuilt from the current public release. They are available under the Open Government Licence. The required Northern Ireland postcode data is not covered by this dataset, so BT postcode coordinate search is unavailable.

If a valid Great Britain postcode is missing from the local files, or a file cannot load, the browser can use Postcodes.io as a fallback. BT postcodes are blocked before this fallback.

How updates work

  1. 1. Fetch

    The data job downloads clothing recycling records from OpenStreetMap and saves a dated snapshot.

  2. 2. Check

    Validation rejects missing identifiers, invalid coordinates and broken record links.

  3. 3. Build

    The site derives its visible counts from the accepted records. It also rebuilds search and map files.

  4. 4. Review

    Large or unexpected changes stop the publish step so they can be checked.

Check important details before you travel

OpenStreetMap data can be incomplete or out of date. Check the named operator when one is available. Do not leave donations beside a full or closed bank.

Map and location records contain OpenStreetMap data under the Open Database Licence.
